The stuffs that I am happy to get for my birthday are...
If it is a heartfelt present, I am glad in anything. When someone chooses a gift for me, they surely think about me a lot, so I am happy about this process more than anything.
I 'd like to get the thing which remains as a memory, I dare say.
Last birth day, I got a painting which my friend drew. I really really really like it.
And also, the absolutely indispensable thing is a birthday card, a letter, or message.
These are irreplaceable gift for me.
...so eventually, the gift that I would like to get for my next birthday is thoughtful and memorable presents.

I know your important point is present with warm heart when you choose it for someone. I would like to see your birthday card which your friend painted. I think it's wonderful isn't it
For the birthday, sometimes I do not think the most expensive is the best gift.Importantly, if the gift can make the receiver feel heartfelt, that is a enough!!
Thoughtful and memorable gifts are wonderful. It's interesting that in American culture, the most common gift is a "gift card" from a store. The person who gets the gift card can then buy whatever he or she wants. I think it is not such a thoughtful and memorable gift. :)
